Summer Reading Program

The 2024 Collaborative Summer Library Program theme is "Adventure Begins At Your Library"

The Olive G Pettis Library invites you and your school-age children to participate in this year's Summer Reading Program (SRP).

Hosting Summer Reading is an annual effort for public libraries to provide a space, materials, and resources needed for students to continue learning while on break from school. Many children experience lapses in reading level and other learning skills, and Summer Reading is here to provide opportunities to have fun and keep learning all summer long!

The Super Summer Reading Challenge

First things first, our SRP has a summer-long reading challenge that each participant will sign up for with their parent or guardian's signed permission. For students in grades K-5, the challenge will be to complete 15 hours of reading. For students in grades 7-12, the challenge is to complete 30 hours of reading. Participants of all ages will be provided with a Summer Reading chart to use as they make progress on their challenge. For K-6, the chart will be made up of 30 circles, with each circle representing half an hour/30 minutes. For every 3 hours (or 6 circles) completed, that participant is able to come to the library and pick out something from our prize basket. If they make it to the full 15 hours before the program ends, they will be awarded a grand prize and issued an official Super Summer Reader Certificate! This system is the same for those in grades 6 and up, except that on their chart, each circle represents 1 full hour/60 minutes and for every 6 hours (or 6 circles) they can come pick out a small prize, and if they complete their full 30 hours, they will recieve a grand prize and official certificate too!
